Shelton Memorial Day Parade
Here are some photos of the Memorial Day Parade.A traditional Memorial Day Parade is held in Shelton every year.
Try to get downtown by 9:00am so you will find easy parking and a good view of the parade.
All the surrounding towns in the Naugatuck Valley are invited to join us in remembering the veterans.
Parade Schedule
Sometimes they start the parade in Derby and come over the bridge to Shelton.
They pass all the old factories, head south on Howe Ave., turn on Center St. and travel north on Coram Ave.
But every year it is different. One year they started on Coram, and went towards Derby.
It is a really long parade because it goes through the Main St. of Derby and Howe Ave. in Shelton.
Then circles around and ends up near the Plumb Memorial library.
Everyone Gets Involved
The parade gets bigger and better every year and always is on Memorial Day. This picture was taken before the parade started.
Notice the old mansion on the hill in the background too.
When we lived downtown the sounds of the roll of drums used to wake us up on Memorial Day morning.
Now that we have moved down toward Southbank Park, I really miss it.
History of Decoration Day
Memorial Day was first widely observed on May 30,1868. It was began to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. It used to be called, Decoration Day. See the World War One Memorial Day Parade
